The End Times

A Simple, Biblical Overview

The Bible teaches that history is moving toward a clear conclusion — God’s plan will be fulfilled, evil will be judged, and Jesus Christ will reign forever

This is not meant to frighten us. It is meant to prepare us and give us hope.

“Surely I am coming soon.”Jesus Christ, Revelation 22:20

What Are the End Times?

The “end times” refer to the final period of human history before God fully restores all things.

The Bible describes:

  • Increasing rebellion against God
  • Global deception and lawlessness
  • God’s judgment on sin
  • The return of Jesus Christ

The establishment of God’s eternal kingdom

“In the last days there will come times of difficulty.” — 2 Timothy 3:1

The Bible presents the end times as a sequence of real events, not myths or metaphors.

The Gospel Is Preached to the World

Before the end, God ensures the message of salvation reaches the nations.

“This gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world… and then the end will come.” — Matthew 24:14

God’s heart remains salvation, even in the final days.

The Rapture

Jesus will return for believers, removing them from the earth.

“We… shall be caught up… to meet the Lord in the air.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17

This event is sudden and unexpected.

“The day of the Lord will come like a thief.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:2

A Time of Great Tribulation

After the rapture, the Bible describes a period of intense judgment, deception, and suffering known as the Great Tribulation.

“There will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world.” — Matthew 24:21

During this time:

  • Evil increases
  • Many turn to Christ
  • God’s justice is revealed
  • God remains sovereign throughout.

The Return of Jesus Christ

At the end of the tribulation, Jesus will return openly and visibly to the earth.

“Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him.”Revelation 1:7

  • This is not secret.
  • This is not symbolic.
  • This is the return of the King.

Judgment

Jesus will judge the world in righteousness and destroy all evil.

“He will judge the world in righteousness.” — Acts 17:31

Satan, sin, and death will be defeated forever.

“The last enemy to be destroyed is death.” — 1 Corinthians 15:26

The New Heaven and the New Earth

God will create a renewed, eternal world where righteousness dwells.

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth.” — Revelation 21:1

In this eternal kingdom:

  • There is no death
  • No pain
  • No sorrow
  • No sin

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” — Revelation 21:4

One day, as Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives, His disciples asked Him a question that has echoed through every generation:

“Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
(Matthew 24:3)

Notice—Jesus was not asked for a date.
He was asked for signs.

Jesus did not rebuke the question.
He answered it carefully, clearly, and extensively.

He did not give a calendar.
He gave conditions.

And He said:

“When you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors.”
(Matthew 24:33)

DECEPTION IN THE LAST DAYS:

Jesus begins His end-time teaching with a warning that He repeats more than any other:

“Take heed that no one deceives you.” - (Matthew 24:4)

He goes on:

“Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.” - (Matthew 24:5)

This tells us something critical:
The last days will be marked by religious confusion, not spiritual emptiness.

There will be:

  • false messiahs
  • counterfeit gospels
  • spiritual language without truth

Deception will not announce itself as deception.
It will look convincing, persuasive, and familiar.

WARS AND GLOBAL UNREST

Jesus continues:

“You will hear of wars and rumors of wars… Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.” - (Matthew 24:6–7)

This is not describing isolated conflict.
It is describing persistent global instability.

  • Wars that never truly end.
  • Conflicts that multiply.
  • Tensions that escalate without resolution.

Jesus says:

“See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.”

These are not the end but they are signals.

FAMINES, PESTILENCES, NATURAL DISTURBANCES

Jesus adds:

“There will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.” - (Matthew 24:7)

The book of Luke records:

“There will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.” - (Luke 21:11)

The emphasis is not that these things exist but that they increase in:

  • frequency
  • intensity
  • global reach

PERSECUTION OF BELIEVERS

Jesus says plainly:

“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.” - (Matthew 24:9)

This describes a shift:

  • from tolerance to hostility
  • from indifference to opposition

Faith in Christ becomes costly.

Jesus is clear this hatred is not regional, but global.

A GREAT FALLING AWAY

Jesus continues:

“Many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another.” - (Matthew 24:10)

The Apostle Paul echoes this:

“In the last days perilous times will come.” - (2 Timothy 3:1)

He describes people who are:

  • lovers of themselves
  • lovers of money
  • proud
  • unholy
  • without self-control

This is moral collapse with knowledge, not ignorance.

Paul also warns:

“They will not endure sound doctrine.” - (2 Timothy 4:3)

Truth will not disappear; it will be rejected.

LOVE FOR GOD GROWING COLD

One of the most sobering signs Jesus gives:

“Because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.”
(Matthew 24:12)

This is not hatred increasing, it is compassion fading.

  • empathy decreases
  • conscience dulls
  • evil becomes normalized

THE GOSPEL REACHING THE WHOLE WORLD

Then Jesus gives a sign filled with hope:

“This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.”
(Matthew 24:14)

This is not speculation. It is a clear marker.

Never in history has the gospel been:

  • translated into so many languages

  • broadcast so widely

  • accessible so globally

This sign is not complete yet, but it is closer than ever.

SIGNS IN THE HEAVENS

Jesus says:

“There will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars… men’s hearts failing them from fear.”
(Luke 21:25–26)

Cosmic disturbance accompanies earthly fear.

Creation itself signals that history is reaching its conclusion.

THE BOOK OF REVELATION CONFIRMS IT ALL

The Book of Revelation reveals the final unfolding of these signs:

  • global deception
  • unprecedented judgment
  • worldwide upheaval

And it declares:

“Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him.”
(Revelation 1:7)

The Second Coming will be:

  • visible
  • sudden
  • unmistakable

Jesus did not give these signs to frighten us. He gave them to remind us.

He said:

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
(Matthew 24:35)

  • The signs are converging.
  • The conditions are aligning.
  • The promise remains unshaken.

What Should We Do Now?

The Bible calls us to be ready.

“Be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” — Matthew 24:44

Readiness means:

  • Repenting of sin
  • Trusting Jesus Christ
  • Living faithfully
  • Walking in hope

For believers, the end times are hope, not terror.

“God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:9

For those who do not yet know Christ, it is a loving warning and an open invitation.
