The Power of Meekness
The Strength of Humility and the Blessings That Follow
In today’s world, meekness is often misunderstood.
Many people think meekness means, weakness, passiveness and lack of confidence
But biblically, meekness is not weakness.
Meekness is simply strength under control.
It is the ability to remain humble, teachable, calm, and submitted to God even when you have the power to react differently.
This is why the Bible repeatedly connects meekness with:
- Peace
- Honor
- Divine Lifting
- Rest
- Salvation
- God’s Favor
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE MEEK?
Biblical meekness means humility before God, gentleness in spirit, surrender to God’s will and controlled strength.
A meek person is not proud, arrogant, or self-exalting. They trust God enough not to force everything in their own strength.
THE BLESSINGS OF MEEKNESS
1. The Meek Shall Have Peace
“The meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.” — Psalm 37:11
Peace is one of the greatest blessings of meekness.
Pride creates conflict, anxiety and constant striving
But meekness produces inner calm, trust in God and stability of heart
👉 A meek person does not need to fight every battle because they trust God to defend them.
2. The Meek Shall Be Lifted by God
“He leads the humble in what is right…” — Psalm 25:9
“Humble yourselves… and He will lift you up.” — James 4:10
God resists pride but gives grace to the humble.
👉 Many people try to lift themselves, but Scripture teaches that true elevation comes from God.
3. The Meek Receive Salvation and Deliverance
“The Lord lifts up the humble.” — Psalm 147:6
“The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord…” — Isaiah 29:19
Meekness positions people to receive from God because humility keeps the heart open.
Pride says: “I can do this without God.”
Meekness says: “Lord, I need You.”
4. The Meek Find Rest for Their Souls
Jesus said:
“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” — Matthew 11:29
Pride exhausts people. Constant comparison, proving yourself, fighting for recognition drains the soul but meekness brings rest because it trusts God with outcomes.
EXAMPLES OF MEEK INDIVIDUALS IN THE BIBLE
1. Moses
“Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.” — Numbers 12:3
Moses had authority and power yet remained humble before God.
Even when attacked by Miriam and Aaron, he did not fight for himself, God defended him.
👉 Meekness allows God to become your defender.
2. Jesus — The Perfect Example
“I am meek and lowly in heart.” — Matthew 11:29
Jesus demonstrated meekness perfectly.
He had the power to destroy His enemies, yet He chose humility, obedience, and surrender to the Father.
Even on the cross, He said:
“Father, forgive them…” — Luke 23:34
👉 True meekness is strength controlled by love and obedience.
3. David
David had opportunities to kill Saul yet refused because he honored God.
“I will not stretch out my hand against the Lord’s anointed.” — 1 Samuel 24:6
David trusted God to lift him in due time.
4. Joseph
Joseph was betrayed, falsely accused, and forgotten.
Yet he remained humble and faithful.
When he finally gained power, he did not seek revenge.
👉 Meekness kept bitterness from controlling him.
WHY MEEKNESS IS POWERFUL
- Meekness Protects the Heart: Pride hardens people. Meekness keeps the heart teachable.
- Meekness Preserves Peace: Not every battle requires your reaction.
- Meekness Attracts God’s Grace: God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. — James 4:6
- Meekness Allows God to Fight for You: When you stop trying to defend yourself constantly, God steps in.
THE DANGER OF PRIDE
The opposite of meekness is pride.
And pride causes downfall, destroys kings and blinds people spiritually
“Pride goes before destruction…” — Proverbs 16:18
HOW TO DEVELOP MEEKNESS
- Spend Time with God: The closer you are to God, the more humility develops.
- Learn to Surrender: Not every situation needs your control.
