The Four Winds

INTRODUCTION

Throughout the Bible, God often uses natural elements to reveal spiritual truths. For example:

  • Fire represents purification. - Zechariah 13:9
  • Water represents cleansing. - Ephesians 5:26
  • Light represents truth. - 2 Corinthians 4:6

And wind represents movement — the invisible power of God at work.

Scripture repeatedly speaks about the four winds — winds coming from every direction of the earth. These winds symbolize God’s sovereign activity across the world and in human lives.

The same wind that restores can also scatter.
The same wind that gives life can also shake foundations.

Briefly we will be at looking at what happens when the four winds blow.

THE VALLEY OF DRY BONES

The prophet Ezekiel is carried by the Spirit into a valley.

What he sees is disturbing:

“The valley was full of bones… and indeed they were very dry.”
— Ezekiel 37:2

These were dry bones.

This represents:

  • lost hope
  • spiritual death
  • national despair
  • situations beyond human repair

God asks Ezekiel:

“Son of man, can these bones live?”

THE WORD COMES BEFORE THE WIND

God first commands Ezekiel to prophesy.

“Prophesy to these bones… O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord.”
— Ezekiel 37:4

As the word is spoken:

  • bones come together
  • sinews form
  • flesh appears

But something was missing. There was structure but no life.

Many things in life look complete externally yet lack spiritual vitality.

THE FOUR WINDS WERE SUMMONED

Then God says:

“Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” — Ezekiel 37:9

The wind represents the life-giving power of God.

When the wind came:

“They lived, and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great army.”
— Ezekiel 37:10

The graveyard became an army. The wind turned death into destiny.

WHEN THE FOUR WINDS WORK FOR YOUR GOOD

The four winds bring blessing when God moves in restoration.

The Wind Brings Life

  • Dead things live again.
  • Hope returns.
  • Purpose is restored.

Just as God breathed into Adam (Genesis 2:7), life comes through divine breath.

The Wind Brings Revival

In Acts 2:2:

“Suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind.”

At Pentecost, wind signaled spiritual awakening. The church was born through wind.

The Wind Gathers and Restores

Jesus said:

“He will gather His elect from the four winds.” — Matthew 24:31

The wind gathers what was scattered and what looked lost becomes restored.

WHEN THE FOUR WINDS BECOME A DISADVANTAGE

The same winds can also bring upheaval.

Not because God changes but because His purposes differ.

Winds of Scattering

God declared:

“I will bring the four winds… and scatter them.” — Jeremiah 49:36

The wind becomes judgment when people resist God.

Instead of gathering, it disperses.

Winds of Turmoil

Daniel saw:

“The four winds of heaven were stirring up the Great Sea.” — Daniel 7:2

The stirred sea produced chaos among nations.

The wind shakes systems that stand against God’s order.

Winds Restrained for Judgment

Revelation 7:1 describes angels holding back the four winds so destruction would not yet come.

Even judgment waits on God’s timing.

THE SAME WIND — DIFFERENT RESULTS

The difference is the condition of what the wind touches.

Condition Result of the Wind
Dry bones aligned with God Life
Resistant nations Scattering
Waiting believers Revival
Rebellion Upheaval

The wind reveals what already exists beneath the surface.

GOD STILL SENDS WINDS TODAY

Sometimes God allows winds in our lives:

  • sudden change
  • shaking seasons
  • unexpected transitions
  • disruptions we did not plan

To some, it feels like destruction. To others, it becomes transformation.

The wind removes what is dead and awakens what is alive.

The four winds remind us that God is always moving even when unseen.

When the wind blows:

  • graves can become armies
  • despair can become destiny
  • dryness can become life

The question is not whether the wind will blow.

The question is:
What direction do you want it to blow, is it for comfort or for destruction?

The same wind that shakes the world can also revive your life.

When God commands the wind, death must surrender to life.
