LIVING ABOVE THE DEVICES OF THE ENEMY
Biblical Principles for Walking in God's Protection
Every believer will face spiritual opposition.
The moment you decide to follow Christ; you enter a spiritual battle.
The Bible reminds us:
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world..." — Ephesians 6:12
Notice something carefully.
Paul does not say believers might face spiritual warfare.
He says we wrestle.
- The battle is real.
- The enemy is real.
- His devices are real.
Yet there is another truth that every believer must hold onto:
God has not left His children defenseless.
The Lord has provided everything necessary for us to stand firm and overcome every scheme of the enemy.
Paul writes:
"Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices." — 2 Corinthians 2:11
God does not want His people to live in fear.
He wants us to live in wisdom, faith, and victory.
Today we will discover seven biblical principles that position believers to overcome the devices of the enemy.
DWELLING IN THE SECRET PLACE
"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." — Psalm 91:1
Notice the promise is given to those who dwell.
- Not those who occasionally visit God.
- Not those who seek Him only during crises.
But those who make His presence their daily habitation.
The secret place is not merely a physical location.
It is a lifestyle of communion with God.
It is developed through:
- prayer
- worship
- obedience
- meditation on God's Word
- fellowship with Him
The closer we walk with God, the more we live under His guidance, peace, and protection.
Consider Daniel.
He lived in Babylon; a nation filled with idolatry and hostility toward the God of Israel.
His enemies plotted against him, they manipulated laws, they sought to destroy his influence.
Yet Daniel remained faithful.
Even when prayer became illegal, he continued to pray three times a day (Daniel 6:10).
Because Daniel dwelt close to God, God shut the mouths of the lions.
The enemy's plot became God's platform for His glory.
The safest place in the world is not necessarily where there is no danger, it is where God is present.
PRAYER AND WATCHFULNESS
Jesus warned His disciples:
"Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation." — Matthew 26:41
Prayer is more than presenting requests, prayer keeps our spiritual senses awake.
A prayerless believer is often a vulnerable believer.
Peter's Deliverance
When Peter was imprisoned, the church did not organize a protest.
They prayed.
"Prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him." — Acts 12:5
While they prayed:
- An angel entered the prison.
- Chains fell off.
- Iron gates opened.
- Peter walked free.
- Prayer invited divine intervention.
Many battles are won in the place of prayer long before victory becomes visible.
WALKING IN RIGHTEOUSNESS
God declares:
"No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper." — Isaiah 54:17
This promise belongs to those who belong to Him and walk in His ways.
Righteousness does not earn God's love, but it keeps us walking in fellowship with Him.
Sin opens doors to compromise.
Righteousness strengthens spiritual confidence and discernment.
Holiness is not merely avoiding sin; it is living in a way that pleases God.
THE WORD OF GOD: OUR SPIRITUAL WEAPON
Paul writes:
"Take... the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." — Ephesians 6:17
Notice that among the armor of God, the sword is the primary offensive weapon.
The Word of God:
- Exposes lies
- Strengthens faith
- Renews the mind
- Reveals truth
- Equips believers for every battle
Jesus and the Wilderness
When Jesus was tempted by Satan (Matthew 4:1–11), He did not argue or rely on emotion.
Three times He answered:
"It is written..."
The written Word defeated the tempter.
If the Son of God relied on Scripture in spiritual warfare, how much more should we?
WALKING BY FAITH
John declares:
"This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith." — 1 John 5:4
Fear magnifies problems.
Faith magnifies God.
Faith does not deny reality; it trusts God's sovereignty in the midst of reality.
The enemy wants believers to be controlled by fear.
God calls us to walk by faith.
DISCERNMENT AND GODLY WISDOM
Jesus instructed:
"Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves." — Matthew 10:16
Not every battle is obvious.
Some attacks come through:
- Deception
- Compromise
- Distraction
- False teaching
- Unhealthy relationships
Discernment helps us recognize what is truly happening beneath the surface.
Consider Joseph.
He experienced betrayal, false accusation, and imprisonment.
Yet he never allowed bitterness to control him.
God gave him wisdom to navigate each season.
What others intended for evil, God used for good (Genesis 50:20).
Discernment enabled Joseph to see God's hand even in adversity.
PUTTING ON THE WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD
Paul commands:
"Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." — Ephesians 6:11
Notice:
- He does not say part of the armor.
- He says the whole armor.
The armor includes:
- The belt of truth
- The breastplate of righteousness
- The gospel of peace
- The shield of faith
- The helmet of salvation
- The sword of the Spirit
- Continual prayer
Spiritual battles require spiritual preparation.
Victory belongs to prepared believers.
THE BELIEVER'S CONFIDENCE
Some Christians become overly focused on darkness.
The Bible teaches awareness and not obsession.
Yes, Satan is real.
Yes, spiritual warfare is real.
But our confidence rests in Christ.
John declares:
"Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world." — 1 John 4:4
The Christian life is not lived from a position of fear.
It is lived from the victory Christ has already won through His death and resurrection.
A life that is rooted in God's presence, guided by His Word, strengthened through prayer, clothed in righteousness, and anchored in faith becomes increasingly difficult for the enemy's devices to overcome.
